Two traffic police officers were Saturday arrested after falling into a trap mounted by Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) officials along Kisii-Kilgoris highway. The two, who had been deployed to man traffic along the route, were nabbed after being caught on camera receiving bribes from matatu and lorry operators. In an operation led by South Nyanza Regional boss Emmanuel Arunga, the officers, a lady and a man, were busted with notes stashed in their pockets. On realising they were in trouble, one of the suspects tried to wrestle the EACC officials in a bid to escape but was overpowered by the detectives who were reinforced by a number of Administration Police officers. After being subdued, the detectives conducted a thorough search on the traffic agents and managed to recover over Sh24,000 hidden in their pockets. The nabbed officers were reportedly set to appear before the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) panel that has been vetting security agents in the area for the past week. This comes barely a week after NPSC Chairman Johnston Kavuludi announced that 302 officers were sacked for refusing to participate in the ongoing vetting process.
