CORD Announces Night of No Sleep in Nairobi.

CORD leaders on Thursday evening outlined consequences the Government would suffer if the five Opposition legislators arrested over hateful remarks were not released within 24 hours. In a press briefing, the Opposition said that it would resume the Monday protests against the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). The leaders added that they would also disengage from talks on the electoral body stalemate if the detainees remained in custody. The Opposition further announced that it would hold a night vigil on June 18, at the Freedom Corner in honour of the apprehended leaders. “We will declare the CORD legislators to be political prisoners and hold a public meeting and a vigil at the Freedom Corner on Saturday, 18th June, 2016,” the statement read in part. The Coalition added that on June 19, 2016, it would proceed to hold a prayer service in Machakos to honour the CORD leaders in custody. In the press statement, CORD condemned the current situation in the country highlighting that the Government was being dictatorial in its decisions. “We wish to draw the attention of Kenyans and the international community to the crisis of governance that is taking roots in our country. This crisis is taking the form of a slow but steady slide to dictatorship through a crackdown on free speech in the name of national security and public order,” CORD stated. Opposition chief Raila Odinga noted that the current political climate was a creation of the Jubilee Government to divert focus from IEBC issues. CORD questioned why the Jubilee Government only acted after their leaders stood to defend Mr Odinga after hateful remarks by Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria, Kabete's Ferdinand Waititu and Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjri. Earlier in the day, Odinga and other CORD leaders visited the alleged hatemongers detained at Pangani and Muthaiga police stations. They were, however, not allowed to see the detained politicians at Pangani Police station.
